“The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” by Edward Gibbon: FINISHED!

Well, I finally finished it. At 7:30 PM exactly, Wednesday, November 22, 2017, I finished “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” by Edward Gibbon. A work 20 YEARS in the making. At times difficult to read due to a somewhat verbose, convoluted, and prolix writing style. Gibbon jumps around at times, and writes as if the reader knows exactly whom he is talking about at any one moment. But, all in all, I can now go to my grave, having read this work. The fall of Constantinople by Mahomet the Second was heartbreaking. Why did the Roman Empire fall? Human stupidity, avarice, laziness, a refusal to think of, plan, and work toward long-term goals, coupled with repeated invasions by barbarians from the plains of central Asia.
