Lemon verbena extract 1,000 times sweeter than sucrose! What?!?

I came across an entry in “Herbs” by Lesley Bremness.  It claims that Lippia dulcis, a type of lemon verbena (a shrub), contains a sweetener that is 1,000 times (!) sweeter than sucrose (table sugar).  Why is this not being investigated as an alternative to artificial sweeteners???
